Carey, Joseph

Joe Carey (TNG-147)

Joe Carey (VOY-103)

Joe Carey apparently served aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D in 2365. He filled in at the bridge Tactical station during a Starfleet wargame conducted in response to the discovery of the Borg.[1]

Joe Carey was an engineer aboard the U.S.S. Voyager NCC-74656 since the ship was in dry dock.[5] Though next in line for the position, he was passed over for the chief engineer slot in favor of B’Elanna Torres when the former Maquis crew was integrated into Voyager following their displacement to the Delta Quadrant in 2370, and served faithfully as her executive officer in engineering.[2]

In 2371, he worked with Seska and Torres on the Sikarian Spatial Trajector, against Captain Janeway‘s orders not to attempt to obtain the technology.[3] Later that year, suspicion fell upon him due to Seska’s covert exchange of technology with the Kazon-Nistrim, but he was cleared of any wrongdoing when it was discovered that Seska was, in fact, a Cardassian agent who had infiltrated Chakotay‘s Maquis cell.[4]

Tragically, Carey was killed in 2377 when Voyager attempted to recover the Friendship One probe, which was launched from Earth shortly after the discover of warp drive and had crashed on a planet in the Delta Quadrant.[6] Portrayed by Josh Clark. The character in the Next Generation episode was unnamed, but it seems quite possible that he was Joe Carey.
