Excerpt
“Do you know what it means to be a healer?” Dr. Bashir asked.
“What d’you mean?” The young Bajoran boy, Cedra, asked cautiously. “I know I’d be a good one.”
“Being a healer means more than how good you are,” Dr. Bashir said. “The first thing they teach you is that a doctor’s prime directive is to never betray his trust. There are people here on Bajor depending on healers for life, for a future. You can’t walk away from a task half-done,” he said, paused, then continued. “I came here with orders to cure the camp fever. It’s gone now, but only from this camp. I can’t leave it at that and still be true to my trust.” No matter what further orders Commander Sisko might want to give me, Bashir thought to himself. The doctor had no illusions: Sisko would search for him the moment they discovered he was gone.
But he had made his choice. He said his goodbye to Cedra, turned his eyes toward the hills, and headed out of camp.
